S&P 500 Rises 0.4% as AI Spend Drives Tech

Robust enterprise AI adoption continues to lift mega-cap technology names, putting the odds of a green S&P close at 63%.

We expect the S&P 500 (SPX) to close up 0.4% today, driven by continued strength in AI-related technology stocks. Enterprise demand for advanced computing power and AI solutions is unwavering, providing a significant tailwind for the sector. This foundational shift in corporate spending priorities means that market performance is increasingly concentrated in companies positioned to capture this growth.

International Business Machines (IBM) stands out in this environment, with its stock positioned to rise by at least 0.7% as it solidifies its role in hybrid cloud and enterprise AI. The company's recent strategic partnerships and a growing backlog of AI integration projects demonstrate that legacy tech players can effectively pivot and capture new revenue streams. We see IBM leveraging its deep enterprise relationships to deploy AI solutions, translating directly into increasing service and software revenue. This validates the company's multi-year transformation strategy.

Nvidia (NVDA) is set for another strong session, with expectations for it to climb at least 1.0%. The company remains the primary beneficiary of the AI infrastructure build-out. Demand for its graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI software platforms continues to outstrip supply in many segments. This persistent imbalance indicates that companies across industries are aggressively investing in AI capabilities, making Nvidia (NVDA) a bellwether for the entire technology sector's capital expenditure cycle. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) also benefits from this trend, and we expect its stock to rise by at least 0.8% today.

On the other hand, the consumer discretionary sector faces headwinds, with CarMax (KMX) anticipated to fall by at least 5% following its pre-market earnings. Elevated interest rates and high used vehicle prices are impacting consumer affordability, leading to weaker sales and margins for the used car retailer. This report will offer a granular look at how tighter financial conditions are affecting big-ticket purchases, potentially signaling caution for other consumer-facing businesses. Conagra Brands (CAG) is also expected to decline by at least 2.5% as inflationary pressures continue to squeeze consumer staples.

The primary risk to our bullish outlook would be an unexpected negative macro data point that shifts market sentiment broadly, or a significant downward revision in guidance from a major AI hardware or software provider like Broadcom (AVGO). Any indication that enterprise AI spending is slowing, or that profitability is eroding faster than expected for key players, would challenge our thesis.
